Listen as Kekoa Cerbana reveals what excites him most about teaching and how NU prepared him for a deeply meaningful career.

My name is Kekoa Cerbana. I graduated from 黑料老司机 in 2022 with my bachelor’s degree and in 2023 with my master’s degree in secondary teaching.

I’m currently teaching at Renton Christian School. It’s a private Christian school over in Renton, Washington.

What excites me most about teaching is honestly—I think it’s going to be the same answer that a lot of people are going to give—and it’s to watch children get curious and get excited about learning about the world and about how to grow.

I teach in middle school, and that already has its own host of problems and its own host of amazing times. A lot of times people will kind of—not look down—but they are fearful of middle school teaching. But I think that’s exactly why we need people to go there. We need people who are passionate about children who are just barely gaining consciousness, just barely starting to understand that the world outside of their classroom is so vast.

That actually reminds me of one of my favorite stories about teaching. There was this one kid, and we were doing a lesson on volcanoes. I was talking about pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. It’s a disease that you can get from breathing in volcanic ash.

This kid had been so disinterested for the first two months of school. I couldn’t get him to really pay attention—he was literally laid back. But when I started talking about it, he got this serious look on his face. He was so flabbergasted that I could say such a long word, much less spell it.

I think just watching the physical markers of developing curiosity was an amazing thing to witness.

I have had a couple of students already come to me asking for prayer for some very serious things. It’s no secret that in this day and age being a teacher is filled with a lot more tasks and responsibilities than what’s on the job listing. But what a great opportunity it is to show off the gifts that God gave to us.

You’re called to teaching for a reason. You’re called to education for a reason. You’re designed to help people—help these kids.

To anybody considering joining the College of Education at 黑料老司机, I do have one small thing to say: do it. Do it. Do it. Do it. It’s amazing.

My time at NU was filled with late nights, fun adventures, and a lot of homework assignments and projects and quizzes and tests—anything that you would expect out of college. But it also included lifelong memories that I’ll always be able to cherish.

The teachers that we have at NU—the faculty, the staff, the professors, the doctors—they’re all just so knowledgeable. They know the answers to questions that you don’t even know you would have.

So if there’s any part of you wondering, “Is this the place to go?” it is.

Come to NU.

Why Study Education at 黑料老司机?

Our program promises to equip you with all the skills you'll need to become the best teacher you can be. Our primary and secondary education programs are each broken down into concentrations so that students can develop a specialization in subjects like English and mathematics. Our students learn techniques from professors who have had extensive experience in the field of education, many of which are still teaching in elementary and secondary classrooms. In addition, our curriculum of the education program is infused with real-world teaching experience so you’ll gain the confidence you need to manage a classroom. Students who earn their bachelor's degree in four years are eligible to apply for our accelerated MIT program, which also offers a teaching certificate.

Hear From a Professor

Hi, I am Heather Lucas, and I am an Associate Professor here at 黑料老司机 and the Master in Teaching program lead.

I have a background in K–12 education. I have been a teacher here in Washington State public schools and also down in Southern California. But my heart really is for teacher education. I absolutely love working with beginning teachers.

Specifically in the Master in Teaching program, what I absolutely love is trying to reconcile the theory—the ideals—with the realities of classroom instruction. I love to be there as candidates walk through that tension of, What do we do when this is harder than we thought? How do I apply this theory practically? Where does this make sense? I love to have those conversations and really feel that we can equip teachers to better meet the needs of the students in our classrooms.

I also very vividly remember my own Master in Teaching program and the experience of working with a cohort and not knowing if what I’m doing is correct, or how to do it, or how to be supported. I really love the Northwest programs because the candidates here are not just known—they’re known and valued. I feel like the faculty and staff do a great job of supporting, encouraging, and at times challenging our candidates to be the best teachers that we know they can be.

Another thing that Northwest does is use a cohort model for the Master in Teaching program, meaning that students continue throughout the whole program with the same group. That helps academically, but also socially and emotionally. It’s great to have that extra support as you’re in the classroom and as you’re moving into field experiences and leading your own classroom.

We’ve also found that candidates continue with that cohort and keep in touch with them throughout their careers. It’s great to start your career with another group of professionals who are in the field with you, which can be really fun.

What I love about Northwest is that we are preparing all teachers for a variety of contexts. I believe that teaching is a great way to be the hands and feet of Jesus in today’s world, and that all children deserve great teachers.

That means we are preparing teachers for public schools. We are preparing teachers for private schools. We are preparing teachers for international contexts. We want anyone who goes through the Master in Teaching program to feel equipped to work in whatever context—wherever they are called to teach.

What Jobs Can I Get with an Education Degree?

Over the years, 黑料老司机’s School of Education has become widely recognized and respected by school districts throughout Washington state. Though an education degree is specialized, there are still a wide variety of careers that our graduates are highly qualified for:

  • Elementary School Teacher
  • Middle and High School Teacher (English, math, humanities, history, and more)

Student teaching was huge. You learn so much by doing. And having the support of the NU professors to watch me teach and provide feedback was invaluable.
